Looming Unemployment.....
Now with Rigoletto installed in the QET I'm out on the streets looking for work. ( my life is casual call... Which means I'm back on the dispatch list... as long as I pay my dues. ) But, it's looking really lean for March and April between now and Les Miz in late April - May. Thankfully, that's a long run into July. As this summer two of the five Major theatres I work in are slated to shut down for new seating and FOH improvements.
I have savings... And I guess I could go on a vacation and then get on E.I. However, the only place I want to go is New York City. And from what I can tell from the NYC live cams it's still really cold there with hard, crusty lumps on ice on the ground. If I go I want it to be spring... not winter.
Plus - I hate the dole. It's so hard to get all the paperwork from my 7 some odd employers in one week and then fill out all the electronic forms. ( Which are designed for a person with one, maybe two jobs. ) E.I. Officers hate me when I show up with a bunch, and still waiting for more RoE's I always get the runaround. And if your working as a casual person the officers treat you like your a compulsive E.I. user. When I can't remember the last time I was on E.I.
I'm just concerned due to not having experienced a real downturn in the economy in the last 10 years. Every year past I've done better and better. And I had to turn down work. Thank god for expecting this would happen right around the time all the Sub prime Mortgages in the US came to a head. If I'd invested my RRSP's in Mutual funds I probably would have lost almost everything I've saved in the last 7 years. So, savings wise I'm in the best shape I've ever been during any recession.
I might have a side gig repairing lighted signage on Skytrain route... I just have to pursue that and see if it's viable enough with shows...

hmmm, I have an intense fear of things like herpes that prevents the whole, "go downtown and pick up a random dude at a bar" thing.

Hey good luck man. I'm always in awe of the multi-tasking prowess of theater people - I can't imagine what it's like to have that many jobs!!!
