Madonna..Steel Day 1
Not much to look at so far.... It was a bit of an early morning cluster fuck. The turf was still being taken out. Some of the trucks were late due to not being able to get through the only one free, available door. Our guys all showed up, but a small few started that... "I don't think I can work tomorrow gag" After a few hours of slogging around. Or, worse they showed up without Steel Toes. some were stopped at the door and sent to get thiers. And others sort of hid through the day on sneakers.
Of course, got stuff dropped on their feet. Steel allways finds a way to find a foot that's not properly shod. Unfortunatly, one cannot put guns to people's heads. Or force boots onto feet. No matter how many times you tell them, " one or two days" Bring your hard hat and Steels. Some People never listen. I mean, a few of thease guys have been doing this stuff for years. I never step on to a stage without steels. But, this time I was the person who didn't need them.
So it was an early replacement day job for me. Which got in the way of calling the riggers. The hardest and oddly most expensive people on our crew lists to get a hold of.
With all the building and Film work still going on in town. High climbing steel guys come at a premium. And they take forever to call back. At times today I really wish I was just a grunt guy, slogging steel around the stadium floor with the others instead of having one ear on the phone, while guarding the post.
I've always felt uncomfortable in management situations with that many crew. I get short really fast with people. As I'm used to all hard pitching in on Small Show or touring crew. And big 40 plus steel slogging guys and girls are really like herding cats the size of water buffallo. Everyone one new is a last minute replacement. So, a mass of junior people trying to work together are the norm on thease ones. I like them... they're keen and call back quick. They just say yes....But, often don't have the chops for the rigging stuff I need to get called. So, I'm a little scared for them, when they do that. It feels like a battleground sometimes, and I'm the one of the sargent's who has to ask them to storm a building.
The T-Shirt selling is going O.K. Once the guys start wearing them I'll get a flood of orders I suspect. The 2XL guys are really happy I thought of them and held on to the shirts, so that they... the members could finally get one.
I'm pretty Tired I should really just sleep.. their is still steel day two and three before the stupid all nighter Production day 1 and Production day 2 that runs straight into the show and then the strike.

An Occasional Man is a great tiki song from the 1950s, it was the inspiration for the name.
