X Marks The Spot....
I Did my Canadian civic duty today and hit the polling station after work. Even though I really think that voting should be mandatory. So we could get an extra holiday every time the writ goes down. And we'd have all thease really absurd, surreal parties to vote for as a protest vote. ( What ever happened to the rhino party???) I was really impressed by the voter turnout in my area. There was such a huge lineup of voters around the block of the community centre with real voter registration cards clutched in their hot hands. That I ditched mine and went in the much shorter, " I didn't get mine line. " And cut the official line up.
Here in Vancouver Centre there's a real interest in making it count. And I hope... giving that evangelical, snooty, rich bitch Harper the Heave Ho... Especially after all the cultural cuts he's outlined for the future if he gets a majority. And I really like Hedy Fry, our Liberal incumbent. She's a great supporter of Theatre and Dance in this city. And always seems genuine when ever I see her in the Vancouver Pride Parade or at opening night at ACT. But, the good turnouts probably more due to the incredible, history making American election race south of us.
( One, that we as Canadian's can't vote in, but will probably affect us more than our own. We're are all very jealous about the fact Americans right now get real Hollywood style politicians to vote for or against. I mean, it's quite the soap opera happening right now in the lower 49. With your collapsing economy, the finger pointing. Dirty pool ads. The Soaring Obama polls and the really frightening Republican three ring circus of Mccain/Palin/BUSH.... And on top off all that. The republican's feverish red state supporters all crying out like munchkins in the middle of hurricane season in OZ. flying spurious, crazy charges of Racism, Sexism, and Agism. Calling Obama an AHrab, a terrorist. Or God Forbid a SOCIALIST.... Seriously, if you guys don't want Obama come November 4th. We in all probability will happily cart him and his cute family over the border and install him as our benign Dictator/ Prime-minister for life. Without a second thought. )
Funny, I noticed how everyone at the polling station was very well dressed, like it's an occasion. But, really they were all just coming straight from work in all the retail stores, offices and other white collar jobs that fill the downtown core. Plus, it was all nice, quiet and orderly. Very Canadian. Simple and straight forward. - Actually, kind of boring. I was hoping for some deluded Green Party supporters to come bug the crowd.
-----------------
Sadly, the predictions are: A slightly stronger Conservative Minority government. Which means more bully tactics to get budgets done....Bitter partisanship arguments over bills, while our resource economy falters due to the shit storm down south. The only plus is the Liberals will have to lose Dion. Who's got to be the weakest Liberal leader in my memory. I always thought Mark Garneau would make a good leader. He's respected across Canada as a former Astronaut. Speaks french and English without a strange accent.
For all we know we'll be doing this again in about 6 months.....

Good luck with your elections. Remember, if you elect a polar bear or a timber wolf or something, Sarah Palin will shoot it.
