Eclipse of The Moon in Bizarre World
I went to a reopening party for The Vogue Theatre. It was odd being back in the building since we were decerted from there back in 2004. The venue stayed open for about 6 months after we were booted out. The new owners then, wanted to turn the venue into a supper club. But it seems all the permit changes and upgrades to the building were far too expensive. So those owner have sort of sitting on it while the building molders.
It was sad walking past it every other day while heading to work of the stores on Robson street. The front, french door windows were all covered in piss and vomit from the three years of neglect. And party goers on Granville street could only see buskers and homeless people in front of the building.
So, when I helped start a facebook group for the venue I didn't know that one of the old FOH managers of the Vogue was in talks with the current owners. To lease the space and put on shows. he invited us down for an open house to see the old venue. And I couldn't miss the chance to set foot in the old girl. Even if it was just as a guest.
The venue has barely changed. Except for some shoring up of the foundation downstairs in the dressing rooms to stop the winter-flooding. it was like stepping back into time. Up in the carp office there were still Union contracts and magazines. And even copies of the last time-sheet from the last union crewed show before the writ came down. There was my name in the Head carpenter column. It was like walking on the deck of the Mary Celeste. I kept thinking I had to help strike the little party band on stage. As opposed to just drink beer and chat the people up I hadn't seen in years.
All odd really, going dancing next door in the Roxy with old friends and they're new girlfriends versus my stay and work feeling. I swore I'd never set foot in that club again as it's owned by the old Vogue Operators who decerted us. But, life moves on and we deal with some things. That feeling of a night of freedom from a place I equate with my livelihood. It makes me really want to just be the locals one calling steward and have a more 9-5 gig. Maybe I could date again. Or take guitar lessons. Go back to BCIT and get my entertainment electrician's ticket while I wait for all the new venues to be re-built for 2010
A change in place... And I felt it even more as we watched the eclipse of the moon. down the street at the 2 parrots
