From cnn.com:
"The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of frozen beef from a Southern California slaughterhouse that is being investigated for mistreating cattle.
Federal officials suspended operations at Westland/Hallmark after an undercover video surfaced showing crippled and sick animals being shoved with forklifts.
Two former employees were charged Friday with animal cruelty. No charges have been filed against Westland, but an investigation by federal authorities continues.
Authorities said the video showed workers kicking, shocking and otherwise abusing "downer" animals that were apparently too sick or injured to walk into the slaughterhouse. Some animals had water forced down their throats, San Bernardino County prosecutor Michael Ramos said."
while i'm glad that this recall is making headlines, i don't believe for a second that the cruelty that occurred at this particular slaughterhouse was out of the ordinary for the industry as a whole. i guess the meat-eaters out there quiet their consciences (if they have one) by telling themselves that this was an isolated incident? if only this recall would lead to further scrutiny of what really goes on at these plants... that would be ideal. at the very least, i hope that some of the people who read about the suffering that these animals endured will reconsider their choice to eat meat.
