it's all about timing.
a few months ago I met a very sexy, very interesting young lady I figured ( for various reasons which, to preserve suspense, I will reveal later) would just be one of those things that might've been...
but...
after not seeing her for several months she popped backed into my life.
kind of on the periphery--then the fore, as it were.
it's complicated.
anyway, I ran into her where she works a week ago or so & we got to talking. I told her where I'd be later that night.
she showed up & we had a damn good time on the dance floor & off.
tonight I happened by her place of work (for unrelated reasons) & asked her if she'd like to get a beer after work.
she said she'd like that.
but....
she gets off at midnight. at 11:30 or so I went to the bar I told her to meet me at & it was closed.
dang, thought I, & went to where she was working to tell her of a change in plans.
she was talking to a guy.
normally, this wouldn't discourage me & I would just tell her what's up, but there was a good chance that the guy she was talking to was her husband.
which would make things kind of awkward.
(I've known she was married for almost as long as I've known her, & that things aren't going well between her & the hubby--NOT that I was looking to move in or anything, just that she seemd like an interesting person in this small town full of mostly uninteresting people)
anyway, not being a person much inclined to either small-talk or confrontation I sort of strolled past them & went to a different part of the casino, where I was roped into a conversation with a woman I used to work with.
then I strolled back past her, where she was still talking with--the guy. (thing is, she's an incredibly attractive woman & has arroused the attention of most of the guys in town & this might've been just one of her many admirers. which would've been cool. just NOT her husband.)
she said "[the bar]'s closed"
me: "yeah, just saw that"
then, in what was either a canny bit of subterfuge or an idiotic bit of self-torpedoing, I said:
"have you seen Maria? I think she probably went down to the Rio. I guess I'll go down there & see."
the strategy was to tell her to meet me at the Rio instead of the other bar, & to keep things cool with guy-that-might-be-the-husband because I was asking about one of her co-workers.
this was flawed in so many ways.
anyway, you have certain nights where everything goes like clockwork--things just fall into place.
& there are nights where just one thing (like, a bar being closed) is out of synch & everything goes pear-shaped.
such is life.
it's all about the timing.
