Dust
by: AC
I walk now across the cracked and blasted plains of our war-torn cradle; striding ankle deep through the charred and shattered remains of our species' beginnings. The evidence of our aborted evolution is all around me, an ocean of sand and smoking failure. I pick up a rock and dust off the ashes of a hundred million of my ancestors. This rock has witnessed all of the great events of our long and bloody trip. It bore witness as the first of us pushed himself erect and struggled to growl out the first word of a thousand-thousand languages. It watched as man enslaved man, trading his cousin's life for a monument to a false god's petty ego. It watched as a race lifted up and cast aside their savior king. It has borne silent witness to the glory and horror that is man, and it will continue to do so as we grind ourselves away to nothing. As we began, so we will end; here in the desolation of the fallen cradle, where I kick through and breathe in the dust of our past.
