My dissertation is finished, bound and submitted!
(This is me looking quite smug)
My cousin came to visit last week. We haven't seen each other for over a year (since his engagement party). We were born four days apart and have always had a good bond. We spent three days drinking, remeniscing and he read my dissertation, suggesting improvements and noting grammatical errors. I don't know why I didn't take any pictures of us, but I didn't.
Last saturday I went to a show. It's a long time since I've sen some decent bands play, so I was looking forward to this. On the line-up were Manatees, These Monsters, and Kayo Dot.
Manatees played a raw, visceral set to which this picture doesn't really do justice. Sadly, the tracks on their MySpace also don't do justice to the CD I bought which is very impressive. I also discovered, courtesy of my cousin, that the name Manatees comes from an endangered sea mammal, which Stephen Fry recently publicised in his TV program (watch the video!)
These Monsters, whose CD I reviewed several years ago for Raw Nerve, surprised me by being more aggressive than they used to be. I was sorry that the sax was almost entirely inaudible though...and also a bit bemused by their body language, the sax player appearing quite isolated (the singer played the entire set with his back to him). They rocked though, in a heavy groove-based fashion.
I didn't know the band Kayo Dot but they were the headliners. Two of their five members had been stopped at customs, so their set was a very stripped-down affair, consisting mostly of tracks from their side project of free-style ambient jazz. It was lovely music and their playing exquisite but after the rawness of the other bands, the audience was baying for something more brutal.
How's everyone else out there? Any good band recommendations?

Congratulations on completing the dissertation!
It's great that you were able to see your cousin and have some drinks! Makes me think, I haven't gone out for some drinks in quite awhile. Maybe I'll go out this weekend. I also love live music. Sounds like great bands.
