Taylor Swift won this battle, but Kanye won the war (Grammy 2010 wrap-up)
And the Grammy award for album of the year goes to......Taylor Swift!!!!!!!! Good for her. Not because I don't think she's talented but so that way we don't hear from her again....for a while. Over the past I'd say 10-15 years (and there are exceptions to this rule), artists who win album of the year are generally never heard from again (Lauryn Hill anyone?) and I'm sick of the sympathy vote she's getting because of the Kanye West fiasco. Yes, what he did was messed up but dammit people grow up! I mean, the CMAs took it upon themselves to make Kanye jokes the whole night and you know that's just low and immature. Because of all the Taylor hype (sorry Bro), you wouldn't have noticed that Beyonc brought home six Grammys, a record for a female recording artist and managed to take Song of the Year for "Single Ladies." Granted on how many times I've played it at weddings, I'm not surprised.
Look, the Grammys are a terrible excuse for an award ceremony considering every year they pick one artist and give them a ton of awards whether its out of sympathy (Taylor Swift) because they died (Ray Charles), or because they wanted to make a statement about diversity (Santana) and yes Michael Jackson was one of those artists they picked to make themselves feel better (don't think he's exempt from this critique because I'm his number one fan). Then again, Thriller sold a ton of records so it would be hard not to give it some award even if its in a category they made up just for the hell of it (Best Album Notes). Whatever, so this years It artist is Taylor Swift. Everyones on the Oh, poor little girl. Were going to give her a ton of awards to make her feel better tip. You cant tell me that it wasnt fixed since Mr. West was visibly absent from the ceremony and only got a handful of nominations despite stepping out of the box for 808s and Heartbreak. Even after all the VMA blowback, he STILL won a Grammy. Actually he won two, both for "Run this Town" by Jay-Z featuring yes, Mr. West and Rihanna and one of the categories, Best Rap/Sung collaboration 3 out of the 5 nominated songs (Ego by Beyonc, Knock You Down by Keri Hilson and Run This Town by Jay-Z) featured Kanye! And on top of that, every year since 2005 that Kanye has been nominated whether it's for projects he's done for himself or for other people, he's won at least two awards. That says a lot about how talented of a musician he irregardless of the politics behind the Grammys so eat THAT on a platter, Taylor.
For the reasons I mentioned above I didn't watch the entire telecast but I did manage to catch the Michael Jackson tribute. I almost teared up watching it because of the song they selected. They brought out Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Smokey Robinson and Carrie Underwood for a performance of "Earth Song" which was interlaced with Michael's vocals from the studio track. "Earth Song" has to be the most powerful song Michael has ever written (Man in the Mirror wasn't written by him) and they had the video with the little girl from "This is it" playing in the background (In 3D for that matter). So seeing that on stage was a reminder to everyone yes, Michael Jackson was more than just a recording artist and a dancer, he wanted to bring love to everyone through his music. This is what his eldest son Prince said when him and his sister Paris accepted an award on his behalf from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. I commend them for being so strong during this time of mourning. I mean, losing a parent is bad enough never mind if your father is the King of Pop. If anyone has any doubts about whom Michael was as a person, look at his children. That alone speaks for itself and you can't ask for a better parent.
