I was just down at the mall and I saw something terribly disturbing. As I was parking the car, I could see in the next parking row ahead of us, a small puppy dog walking between two parked cars. The car right next to where the puppy was walking started up and began rolling back.
The puppy yelped very loudly. The driver got out and just stood there looking at the puppy. The dogs entire back and hindquarters were under the vehicle's front right wheel! I grabbed the driver and told him to pull forward off of the dog. He did so, stopped the car, and got out again. I asked him if that was his dog or some dog that was just happened to be in the parking lot. He said it was his and did not know the dog had gotten out of the car. Just then the guy's passenger grabbed the dog off the ground - it was all the while squealing in pain, and the two people got back in the car and sped away.
I know all the police officer in town, so I called 9-1-1 and spoke with the patrol officer for the mall area. I gave the police the vehicle license number, which was registered to an address on the nearby Indian Reservation. The officer called the reservation police, who went to the people's home. They admitted running over the dog and told the police that on the way home, they pulled over and shot the puppy and threw it in the river, to put it out of its misery. I guess that was a humane thing to do under the circumstances, but what gall these people have. First, allowing the puppy to get loose, and then running it over!
The patrol officer said the people had children who were very upset about the puppy being hurt. He said the people did not tell the children that the dog was put down. Im sure the driver feels really bad about all of this. It was a truly terrible thing to witness.
