So. here is Monday. My tooth is gone bad. And I want to got to the dentist. But I can't... and why?
Because I lost everything.
I started Friday with a little over $1000. I went home to Walla, cleaned up the club rented sound gear.. .paid an engineer.... I got the turn tables set up, gathered my staff... Set up this huge wall movie screen thing, got hotel rooms for my artist... It was truly a beautiful site! $2369 later... most of which was on credit, I started my show..
It began with Some great Dj's... Go d I love Zak he is a great point man, he pulled together my second room while i entertained my break dancers. They were soo on it, and Soul felons crew showed up... They brought the war on!
Then after the 64 people showed up the realization set in... There was only 64 people there... $470 at the door... Thats what we took in.. 470... the number repeats in my head... I held my cool though I wanted to scream!
I lost all my money,,,
Oh the things I could do with it today.. like the dentist... I am missing work loosing more money because I don't have money for the DENTIST!!!
SOB.
Was it worth it?
The cops at the door asked my door guy that question...
I was around the corner. I could hear them they could not see me, I was curious as to what my door man would say.
Cops "Why does he do this?"
Door guy: "He tells us that its because he is trying to keep a promise. its knda weird... I think though its because he grew up here, and he hated growing up here, he hated hove nothing to do, so he wants the kids to have something... "
One of the other officers spoke up, a lot of them know me.. I was a mess in high school.
"that kid was Walla Wallas first street kid, you guys only been her a year or two, but if you had been around a few years ago... you would have known who Travis was... every time you turned around he was in the papers, for saving a dog from a fire, or being arrested for under age drinking..."
He went on about the police sheriffs daughter, the party in the woods, and the whole from page Sunday paper story... They laughed... It felt good to hear the cop tell the story and laugh about it now.. It was different then...
So was this worth it?
While pushing the Power 99.1 radio station van which had run out of gas, back to the station full of amps and speakers, Tommy boy asked me that question....
I nearly cried I wanted to say "no"...
but I stopped pushing looked at him and remembered holding up the winning break dancers hand in front of the two crew at 2 a.m. and watching them all cheer.. I watched as a bunch of small town kids who danced harder then I have ever scene stare back at their new champ in awe, at an event that would rival any they had been too.... was it worth it?
I said to Tommy "yes" because when I was that kid in the crowd I never got to have that moment where I stared in awe... I grew up with out awe... I gave them that moment...
$2000 later. with a sore tooth I am home. I am hurt. I am bruised... I will spend some time trying to fix my bills but... I got to see "awe"
hehhe Can't wait for July 12th when I do it again!!!
I will post pictures later!!!

Money comes and goes, but making a difference lasts forever. sounds to me like you were giving something great to a comunity. Its great to know theres someone who can see past themselves and see how what they do makes a difference to others.

After about a year of those he went to a bar that was a cowboy bar on the edge of our downtown. They werent doing very well as the city didnt have many cowboys so they had nothing to lose when my friend offered to throw a 18 and older night during the week. He promoted the shit out of it with fliers at highschools community colelges and radio ads they brought in 1000 the first week.
Half way thru the night the owner went out and printed fliers himself for the next week and cut out my friend as he didnt have a contract. (That place is still packing the kids in everyweek since they arent in residential area they can stay open an hour after they stop serving alchohol and the other bars close)
My friend then went to the club Prince owned at the time called glam slam and did same thing but had a written contract this time. He made out like a king by taking at least half the door I think and all he did was promote the night so he had little cost other than kinkos and some bar rush radio ads, and an ad in the weekly alt paper that ran all the ifo for shows and bars etc. He was still able to help some friends get wristbands as he was one who purchased them.
He couldnty get a liquor license cause the cops knew him from his illegal party days so he got a partner and decided to run his own bar twice. First time he picked a partner who liked to go to the casino so they didnt make much money. The second partner was a silent partner and basicaly he broke even.
It was the glam slam years that provided him cash to start buying rental property now he doesnt have to throw parties. Since we have had record years in real estate the last 10 years his net worth is sky high.
anyways dont worry keep at it, the dude I knew wasnt the smartest or most well connected person actually he was sorta a geek but he worked his ass off and never gave up. He always knew like you do that kids need somewhere to go other than to movie theater, tapping into it is a goldmine.
