just for shits and giggles here is one of the old F's I've been shooting with.

it is now the Day of the Dead... you gotta like the SG motif. I appreciate the little things they do here. and the pussy as I've said, yes yes. anyhoo, I just finished reading a Galen Rowell book I got at a used bookstore a few weeks ago. unfortunately it completely fell apart, and I just read it in bedtime and never took it around in my bag or anything. don't know where that receipt is either. it is a great book though- Galen Rowell's Vision: The Art of Adventure Photography. great showcase for his work and good reading for an aspiring photographer. he was one of my favorite photographers and my biggest inspiration growing up. I used to read his column all the time in Outdoor Photographer. this is the first book of his that I've read so now I wanna check out some of the others. also I didn't find a quote which I wanted to use on my website to replace the John Muir one ("Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, place to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul"). it just sounds a little too Kumbaya for me. plus I like to switch it up a bit ya know.
seeing Rowell's nature photos from all over the globe was also part of why I became an environmentalist. I grew up in a quite uninspiring landscape in southern New Jersey. there was this one little beautiful wetland area near my house that was my little nature sanctuary and source of inspiration right in front of me. I would see all these awesome photos by Rowell and other photographers and wished I lived somewhere with more interesting subject matter. finally I had what I wanted when I went to VA for college but at that point getting a biology degree was 1st priority and photography always on the back burner. most of the photos on my website though were photogaphed when I lived in Charlottesville, VA. after college I was there for a few years before coming out to cali for a job at a nature camp. unfortunately while those crazy kids drove me nuts I couldn't distract myself taking pictures and then after moving to the city I injured my knee pretty bad. kinda put an end to any thoughts of "adventure photography" or even large format landscape work which I'd always wanted to try. I haven't really had the loot to get around CA with my camera and take advantage of the western landscape either. just waiting (busting my hump really) for my proverbial "ship to arrive". any day now... but getting back to Galen Rowell. he was a bay area native. a rock climber who first started taking photos while climbing and maybe published a few things like that. in the early 70's is when he became a pro. his proximity to Yosemite Nat'l Park and his experience climbing there gave him lots of opportunity to photograph what he verifies as surely one of the most beautiful places on earth. a buddy of mine once told me Rowell probably had like 60.000 slides of Yosemite... Wow. he photographed in the mountains all over the world- the Himalayas, Alaska, Patagonia. he would go around with his wife who piloted a cessna. they would fly all over S. America and stuff for photo stories. they were returning from a photo expedition in 2002 with a couple other people and their plane crashed in CA with no survivors... what a story. what a life. RIP Galen...
