pretty perfect evening:

crepes (goat cheese with leeks & smoked salmon) at Cafe Henri in the West Village, with lady AC. Before that was pate and escargot.
saw The Sun...so fucking brilliant & beautiful! I want to get some stills from the film somehow...there's a scene where he's looking at the moon over smoking, bombed Tokyo the night he decides to renounce his divinity. I want it framed!

Been thinking about that period of history a lot as I cut my documentary...want to understand more what happened in Japan leading up to the war.
It was a WW2 Japan weekend:

I got a torrent of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence & we watched Friday. I'd seen it before, maybe twice since it first came out. Once I'd gotten the torrent which took a whole night I saw it wasn't subtitled...it's a film that's flawed in a lot of ways but fascinating that it was made with David Bowie and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
One thing II noticed this time was how great Takeshi Kitano is in the film. The arc that goes from his drunkenly sparing Tom Conti's life from execution and gleefully saying the words of the English title as he awaits his own execution is really touching and conveys so many layers of U.S.-Japan relations in one moment.
