My Valentine's Day Adventure!
Oh I wrote this as though I was speaking to you so I don't really care about grammar and sentence structure so yeah, no critiquing!!!![tongue](https://dz3ixmv6nok8z.cloudfront.net/static/img/emoticons/tongue.55c59c6cdad7.gif)
I walked down to the north end of the island, took my camera with me in case I found something worth photographing. As I was walking I came upon this sign in the woods, some Gov. sign saying people were prohibited from going in therewell Im a curious girl that just doesnt listen. In front of the sign there were a lot of thick hanging grapevines and this part of the woods looks so different from the rest; the pines are thin and have good spacing between them so you can see through. it looks a little eerie from the bike path. So I tried to read the sign not being able to tell exactly what it said being that it was old and very dirty; then made my way into the woods that I had seen many times and never thought to go in there isnt much underbrush between the trees making it very easy to navigate and really look around.
I am never scared when Im in the woods alone because the trees despite the way we treat them love us and have no ill will towards any creature, but I get nervous and a little frightened when I see man objects in the woods. They always seem to be hiding something you dont know what to expect from a man object in the woods because its not natural. As I was wandering through it felt like the noises from the road were being muffled even though I could still see the street quite well, it was like I was entering another world. Then in the corner of my eye I spot this rusted orange metal cone shaped thing. At first I was going to avoid it but my curiosity over came the distrust of the man object and I made my way to inspect it. It had a circular hole in the side and when I lifted it up the bottom was made of glass! At first I thought it was some strange trap that was forgotten but I looked up and nailed to a tree was a wooden beam with another cone attached to it, the cone was a light fixture! But what were they doing in these woods with no other man objects in sight, no buildings for quite a distance it was really strange.
I left the light as I felt drawn to head right and I came upon a glorious old tree, he was old and twisted not a grand tree but he had a presence about him, the ground all around him was different from the rest the brush and little plants were much darker than the standard pine needles that littered the ground. I felt the tree and carried on my way noting the gross old beer can in his midst. I carried on for a ways and discovered this adorable little clump of gray ground moss! I made sure not to step on it as I went by and to my delight I came upon a little cluster of these mossesit looked like a little village of moss houses! Right next to the moss village happened to be a trail and I made my way up thinking to myself how much I disliked trails at how I feel that if people truly want to visit nature they should not cut her so that you may view from the outside but that people should walk through herover branches and vines, spider webs and briars and if they dont want to deal with all that stuff then they should just leave her alone.
As I was walking up the trail I saw an odd shape in the woods and I started to get that uneasy feeling I get when I see a man objectit was two very rusted barrels sitting in a dead looking part of the woods, it gave me the creeps but not as bad as the little 3ft high cinder block house that was 20 ft away it was about 4ftx 6ft with a solid black opening where a door should have been and there was some rusted junk lying around itmy stomach sank at the sight of it. I felt something terribly ominous about it and like there was something there watching me and while this is all probably part of my own mind it was a powerful feeling I tried walking away from it but I had to sprint around the corner till I couldnt see the little shack. I felt better after rounding the corner with the sun in my face and the trees shaking in the wind as if greeting me. This part of the path was well traveled by horse and people foot prints and it was terribly muddy. I got my shoes very dirty going through there but I didnt care because I was on an adventure! As I got beyond the mud I could hear the crashing of waves and the trees were thinning outI had made it to the sound! I knew where I was going I had walked this path before but it is always different each time and it was the first time I had ventured into those woods to get to the path! I could smell the cold wind coming off the water and felt the suns rays on my faceit was totally worth the walk. I met a nice couple as I was making my way over the shore to the road and I took their picture for them and went on my way.
The trek back is always harder than going out; I always walk back on the unpaved side of the road I like to be close to the trees and see if there is something exciting on this side. As Im making my way down the ditches I noticed some signs stating that these woods are wildlife refuge and entry is prohibited (again) and I was already too tired to go tromping through the woods and it was getting dark. My point in telling about these signs is that I started to notice a lot of the trees had pink and white plastic tied around them and many were cut down and the earth was ravaged and tornI was outraged! They have signs marking this as wildlife refuge and yet trees are being cut down, and for what?! I could not find a rhyme or reason to the cutting it looked as though they were making a drive way but. Where were the houses? It just made me really mad, it hurts me to see trees lying on the ground twisted and broken, roots in the air why there doesnt seem to be a good enough reason that I can see. But I had to keep going I was to make it back home before it was totally dark out.
The walk got harder as it got colder and my hips started to ache like they always do when I go walking and to make matters worse there were two guys behind me that were yelling something I couldnt tell what and I didnt dare look behind me so I just picked up my pace and booked it down Basnight St. to go through the short cut. When I got to the short cut I found it to be completely flooded still and had to go around and find another way which involved me jumping a small fence, but I made it home just in time for dinner. I spent 2 hours walking from Etheridge rd. to the North end of the island and back. I think this was successful venture and a good Valentines Day even though I spent it by myself.
