What's up with this damn insomnia?! I slept less than 2 hours last night, and here it is almost 3AM again and I'm still wide awake.. Actually I'm getting things accomplished, so I suppose it's not all bad.. I successfully did what AT&T's useless tech support department could not! I sat here for hours with all my testing gear and troubleshot the DSL connectivity problem, which sadly turned out to be something I will have to pay for. *rolls eyes* The main phone box outside has suffered from water damage, and therefore all the terminals are corroded.. In other words this simply means that no matter what kind of new wiring I run from that panel, the panel itself needs to be replaced at my expense! Being the the ever resourceful hacker that I've been known to be, I managed to get it up and running by connecting a patch cable directly to the test port on the panel. Sure.. it's not exactly neat.. True.. There was probably a better solution, but I REALLY hate Comcast and refuse to keep paying almost $70/mo for high speed internet when AT&T is only $25/mo! Anyway.. It ain't pretty, but it'll work till I can pick up a new box somewhere. All I can say is I'm glad I decided to keep all my telecom tools from my days of being a lowly wiring monkey
I do have to give AT&T points for being open till midnight, as it was very helpful to be able to harass them and get them to boost or lower the signal for me during my testing. What pisses me off is the fact that I had to do what one of their techs should have done in the first place. It's not rocket science or brain surgery. Telecom is quite simple, and any decent tech with half a brain could have done the same thing I did and then I wouldn't have spent 5 hours of my day/night doing it my damn self! Oh well.. I guess that's what happens when companies will hire any moron with a set of hand tools.
After comparing speeds, Comcast is still just a bit faster than AT&T's 6MB Elite package, but AT&T's speed is 100% consistent, and that's what matters most. Comcast's speed just jumps around too much for them to justify the obscene fortune that they charge me every month for piss-poor customer service and mediocre internet access..
Well.. If any of you actually just read all of that, you are either A. VERY FUCKING BORED. or B. Just as much a geek as I am! Either way.. It's about time I got some more work done.
