On Halloween a group of us met with our sprogs at the memorial bench for my friend's son. I was thinking about how profoundly negative the death of a child is. About how we will probably meet here a lot, as it is a marker in both time and space. After the usual meet and greet, we sauntered off to let our children get their 'treats'. It struck me just how sanitized halloween really is, it purports to connect us to death, to the mysterious, to the frightening, but it really does not, Its more about consuming candy, and looking at rubber, plastic and crepe paper decorations. I have been fortunate enough to be in Mexico a couple of times during the Dia de los Muertos celebrations and have been struck at how much more this holiday connects one with those who have died.
