Update:
Cablegram- evil drink. Avoid at all costs.
Weather- sucks ass, still very cold at 6 AM when I go to work.
Grad school- still not accepted, (resignedly) planning lots of re-applications next year.
Pipe band- sounds great.

I hope grad school happens for you this year, but if not that sucks. I went 0-for-11 the first time applied, and then ended up fully funded in a terrific program for me the next year, so you never know. If it doesn't happen, savor the year off.
