I am so sad that Poly Styrene passed away. She was so young. Her death was overshadowed by the tornado super outbreak here in the US which was between 04/25/11 (day she died) and 04/28/11. I'm not sad that the tornado outbreak was covered, but rather that her passing got even less coverage and less people knew that we'd all lost this giant amongst music pioneers.
I loved X-Ray Spex and I loved Poly. I feel like she was the first person I recognized as *the* pioneer for what was to become the riot grrl movement. It's women like her (and Patti Smith and Kathleen Hanna and Corin Tucker and and and and and.....) that shows me & makes me realize that women like me (nerd music geek dork poet artist rabblerouser homebody ) can be musicians too.
Rest in Peace, Poly. Thanks for everything.
