Haven't done this in a while but I've got a good story for this: DISASTER VACATIONS!! Thanks @missy @lyxzen @charmaine @rambo!
I went to DC for the first time when I was 21, right after visiting a friend in Baltimore. I had planned to stay with a friend of a friend in DC and arrangements had been made that we would meet at one of the metro stations and take a cab to his home. He was extremely generous with his time and going out of his way to make me feel welcome and excited about visiting, even told me at a Christmas party earlier that year that I could "stay with him whenever I wanted and he's be happy to have me!"
Fucking lying fake ass prick.
I left Baltimore with another friend from LA pretty late, around 10pm. Our friend from Baltimore drove us to said metro station and insisted on waiting but we ended up making her leave because it was so late and we felt bad. Finally around 11pm we get a phone call from our DC host saying "we were putting him out and he wasn't going to be able to let us stay with him". End call. Sorry, can't do it. Doesn't offer any other solutions or options for two young girls that are now hanging out at metro station at 11pm. Thanks a lot asshole.
No big deal. We are resourceful. We took the metro into the city and found a hostel, WHICH, because the fucking Cherry Blossom Festival was going on that weekend was COMPLETELY booked until the next night and that was the ONLY night there were beds available. It's now after midnight, which all you DC dwellers know that means the metro was now closed. I was in a city I was unfamiliar with with no where to go and I knew no one but my good for nothing now ex-friend of a friend. We called all remaining hostels in the city. No vacancies. The cheapest hotel/motel room was $500 a night. Fucking fuck.
It got to the point where the situation was so ridiculous I started laughing hysterically and said, "Fuck it!! Let's just walk around homeless all night! We have nothing better to do and we may as well look at all the monuments while no one is around."
So we did.
We were homeless in DC, at the time, one of the most dangerous cities to be walking around after dark in. All because some asshole couldn't communicate earlier that he didn't want to house us.
Honestly we saw one person that whole night- a cop, and he just asked what were doing and drove away leaving us on the steps of the Capitol, which we then promptly took a nap, at 2am, lying on the steps of that Capitol. It was kind of awesome actually.
So yeah, after that trip I am pretty much equipped to handle anything, as later in the weekend we got harassed but a violent pregnant women, left by a cab driver in the wrong and very shady location, and ended up having our flight cancelled and had to sleep in the airport.
Disaster trip, but extremely memorable and fun seeing as we made the best of our situation. I was extremely lucky not to have anything bad happen to me and I'm much wiser in choosing my friends now.
