I just returned from the Penny Arcade Expo, where my friend JoshEEE was one of the random 20 people chosen to compete in the Omegathon.
The first round was Diceland. The 20 contestants were split up into 4 tables of 5. The player with the lowest score at the end of the game was eliminated.
My friend Josh came in 2nd in that round and moved on.
Round 2 was Halo. 16 player deathmatch. Top 12 moved on. Josh placed 3rd.
Round 3 was Mario Kart Double-Dash. Teams were determined randomly, and the top 4 karts of 6 moved on. Josh and his partner Kevin moved on placing 2nd.
Round 4 was Dance Dance Revolution. The 8 players were matched up randomly, and had to dance 2 songs. The scoring was done by number of perfects. Josh was matched up against Svetlana. They were pretty even and Josh moved on with a score of 123 to 128.
Round 5 was old skool DOOM. 4 player deathmatch. Top 2 players after 10 minutes would move on to the top secret final round. In the practice round, Josh was owned pretty hard, 25-23-7-6. In the actual competition round, Josh and Tina were tied at 0 each for a LONG time, with Sean & Kevin had 7 & 6 frags each. Then, Josh made a HUGE comeback starting with an amazing triple kill. As the round counted down the last minute, the score was tied 0-13-13-13. Sean got a double kill, raising his score to 15, and Josh scored a kill against Tina. However, before the frag counted, the round ended. So, Kevin & Josh were tied at 13 each and moved on to tiebreaker round. Kevin used the tried and true "Rocket Camping" technique to win the round 5-3.
So the TOP SECRET final round was between Sean & Kevin. They took the stage in the theater right at 7:30, and sat on a big couch in front of a big screen. Gabe & Tycho introduced us to the final game: PONG. Best 2 out of 3 games to 15 points. Sean won 2 games to 0, winning the Omega Collection. Kevin, placing 2nd, won $500 in credit at EB.
So there it is, your OMEGATHON recap. I'm sad that my boy JoshEEE didn't make it all the way, but he was happy to have placed 3rd, and the two guys who went to the finals couldn't have been any cooler. In fact, all the contestants were really cool, and great to have competed against.
