Another epic week comes to and end - next weeks infinite possibilities await. Im taking my service van into the shop tomorrow 8AM sharp, so Ill be without it for at least two or three days. That means Im stuck at our Tempe switch. Darn! No trouble tickets or installs for half the week. I mean, just shucks, folks! Darn it all to heck, Ill have time to catch up on all the other million projects Ive got going. Fiddle-sticks!
On Friday one of our core routers, a Cisco 7513, decided to finally roll over and die. The 7500 platform is a little older, but would still be serviceable if it werent plagued with hardware and software issues. I could get into how the data department told upper management that equipment was trouble four years ago, and how they ignored it until recently, as part of an overall network upgrade, the go-ahead was given to replace itbut I wont.
At 9AM it started to have issues - specifically, a nasty memory leak that caused just about all of its memory to become corrupted. At 11AM the decision was made to reboot it, knowing full well it might not come back. Once it was rebooted, it stuttered back to life and back to around 40% functionality. They tried and tried all day to get it back, but realized the memory was almost totally corrupted. There was no saving her. Two data techs, myself and another field tech pulled a shotgun install replacing the 7513 with a brand-new 6509-E in about an hour with very little down time. I left shortly after my work was done, but from the e-mail that the data department manager sent out it went pretty damn smooth afterwards. Quite an experience.
We have some really cool network upgrades coming. Well actually be able to complete them according to schedule, unlike Fridays incident. Its all pretty exciting in a computer geek sort of way.
Between that and being the off-hours IT manager for a small real estate company, Ive got my paws full. Sometimes I feel like it never ends, but I do get some kind of twisted satisfaction out of always being so busy.
Yeah, I'm a sick fucker that way.
