Some thoughts from the Q train....
An artist can never create art without the participation of his or her history, experiences, beliefs and context in life. The irony though, is that sometimes great art can be appreciated outside of the consideration of the artist. Why is it that we have a greater admiration for an artist who consistently creates greatness compared to one who makes just a singular one? The appreciation of what each one of us individually calls great art is a highly subjective judgement, taking into consideration our own interpretation, beliefs, history, and experiences. That said, why do get so worked up when someone does not share a similar judgement in something we believe to be a truly genius work of art? Imagine if I told you I thought your favorite band was complete shit and my ears bled when I heard the intro to your favorite song. You might blow that off as a difference of opinion, or you might get pissed and/or try to convince me otherwise. Why is it important that we try to make others see the greatness we see? Why do we listen to critics and experts, people whose views we elevate to a special status of importance? Why are their senses more acute, more trained than yours, especially if appreciating art is such a subjective experience?
Is this not the same mechanism for our judgment of beauty? Without delving into Kant and Goodman or touching on the matters of the sublime, how do we determine beauty? A beautiful face, a beautiful soul, a beautiful song, a beautiful day. What is the common element?
Apparently 10:30 pm Sunday night is the hour everybody in NYC is supposed to walk their dogs.
Henry Hill, currently a chef, was arrested this weekend for selling meth in Nebraska. Felony charges...but do you think he'll do time? How does this work with his special status?
I watched I, Robot and thought they couldve made that something into something really intriguing, not some half-assed attempt. Ive never read Asimov, but I imagine he couldnt have been that happy with the way that movie turned out.
My roommate says money doesnt change people, it just brings out a persons true self.
I miss the warmth of the one I love sleeping next to me.
