One thing that always helps me out in a nightmare is to practice your control in a dream. Try lookin at your watch or a clock in your dream, because you'll notice that clocks are always messed up. It'll be a nice reminder that you're just sleeping and it can't hurt you.
I still have nightmares but they don't affect me that much, becuse I can tell that they're not real.
