I love to travel, it's such an amazing catalyst for change in almost all aspects of your life. It's so sad how large of a role money plays!
Recently, while traveling around Europe, I used a couch surfing website to find locals that could show me their city. The coolest part is that most people on the site will actually provide a place to stay, too! While there, we actually only stayed in a hotel two nights out of eighteen days.
When you are couch surfing, there is no money involved for a place to stay. Most meals we ate were cooked in the kitchen, using food we went out and bought at the local grocery store. They were almost always unique to that culture. Each meal also had some story behind it, as in how their mom used to make it all the time when they were a kid, etc. When you go out, you don't try to find something to do, you go out with them and their friends, and meet tons of people and see all of the best places in the city! It sounds too good to be true, and that's what I thought, but looking back on it now, it's ever better than it sounds.
Now that I'm back in the states, all I want to do is host international travelers and show them around Los Angeles and Pasadena. So, if you, or a friend, is going to be in Los Angeles sometime soon, check out CouchSurfing and maybe I can even show you around!
