In Super System by Doyle Brunson, he says that you need to take scheduled vacations from poker to continue to be successful, even when you are running well with your game. You still may have flaws and taking a break helps to correct them.
Therefore, I was planning on making this evenings poker time my last for a while.
The game in the South Side ended up falling through, so I ventured to Blockbuster, purchased three movies (Miracle, Adaptation and Shaun of the Dead) with the money I probably would have lost at the game anyway.
When I came home, I figured I would play some poker tonight and then watch Shaun.
I had a little over $5 in my account and there was a $3 buy-in event. I signed up for that one, and used the remaining $2 plus to buy into a cheap sit and go.
I didn't last long in the sit and go, so I figured this might be an early night. Nearly 2 and 1/2 hours later I find myself heads up with a substantial chip lead.
After falling behind only once, I played my cards very well, and emerged victorious. Now, seeing as how it was only a $3 buy-in, I only took home $43 in profit, but that's a nice little night seeing as how I figured I would lose my other money at the game, picked up three kick ass movies, and still walked away ahead.
I only beat 56 other players tonight, but it feels good to get that first win under my belt. I will continue to play cheap tournaments until I can either a) build a bankroll to play in larger tournaments or b) emerse myself into theory, statistics and psychology of the game so my game is much better.
There is a weeklong tournament in October in Atlantic City. I'm setting a goal to play in the first and cheapest NL Hold'em event they have. If I cash I will move on to another. Maybe I can bring home some decent cash.
But what is more important now is a vacation from poker. I have several pressing issues which needs to be taken care of immediately, and poker can wait. Who knows for how long. I will still study the game, watch it on TV and read up as much as possible, but I won't even play for fun for a few weeks.
I'm going to let this victory sink and and remember it is just one victory. I still have a ton of work to do on my game.
But one day.....
p-skank
p.s. Shaun of the Dead kicked soooo much fucking ass! I am so glad I bought it. I can't wait to see Land of the Dead. I'm planning on going next Sunday if anyone is interested (I work Fri/Sat.)
Adaptation is one of my favorite movies (I consider it one of the movies that has really shaped the way I look at the world), and I am super psyched I finally bought it.
As for Miracle, not only a great movie, a great story, a great sport, but a great movie to get me in the mood. No, not that mood silly, a hockey mood. They say that after watching Rounders (which I obviously own) that you instantly becoming itching for some poker or whatever type of gambling. Well, Miracle does that for my hockey lust. I might just need that movie as a pregame warmup this upcoming roller hockey season.
Once again I am babbaling.
p-skank again.
