"The first step on the path towards genius is admitting you know nothing at all"
like that? i just made it up!
what does it mean, though? it means that, for me, i consider myself to be much wiser and more intelligent now than i did 10 years ago, but it's mainly do to the fact that i can accept that i know very little about life, the universe, and everything. it's allowing yourself to admit how little we know- how small we are- that enables you to open yourself up to true knowledge.
it can apply to many things.
instead of insisting that i'm not racist, i've recognized that's it's pretty much impossible to be raised in this country and not be racist to SOME degree [no matter what race you are]. i've since looked within myself, recognized the subtle, racist attitudes and behavior that i've exhibited, and now work to improve them.
in other words, the first step on the path towards racial equality is recognizing the racist within. hmmm...
the above can also be applied to sexism.
instead of immediately ignoring or putting the opinions of right-winged christians, i've recognized that that putting down those types and their views is just as bad as, if not worse than, the views i'm against in the first place.
the first step on the path towards tolerance is admitting how intolerant you are.
or something like that.
instead of insisting that my opinion is the right and/or ONLY opinion, i've recognized that my opinion is just that, and it's neither better nor worse than the opinion of someone else.
all and all, i think i'm a much better person b/c of it. i feel like i can LIVE with myself more by finding, embracing, then working on my faults.
look within yourselves. you might find that you don't know yourself as well as you thought you did. it can be a painful process, but in the end you'll be a much happier and more fufilled person.
love,
prudence
