TopComputer yays and woes...Bottom introspective malady...or more simply, skip to the bottom if you don't know computers
I get a breakout box for my laptop. It's usb 2.0 so it should handle shit better than firewire (That's USB 2.0's 480MB/sec vs FireWire's 400MB/sec.) But there's rediculous noise coming out of it. I really should just call customer service, but i'm terrible with phones. I swear i have a hard time talking to my friends on phones, let alone some random person who's going to try to help me set something up on my computer. Often, when my phone rings, i don't even check to see who's calling, i just shut off the ringer. I hate dealing with the phone. It's a serious issue i have that i should probably look into.
However, i've been transitioning most of my musical-computer-doings to my G4, which i had previously used for only one powerhouse musical application. I also found a guy online who got the same peice of USB gear to work in linux. Well that rocks, because i'm in the process of teaching myself SUSE Linux 10 on an older PC.
I know, i can transfer all my proprietary music software (IE: Reason and Ableton Live) to my G4, and use the laptop in conjunction with the G4 to run open source audio production applications via the USB audio box. Simple enough? I've already got my old PCI M-Audio Delta Omni I/O card/breakout box running in OSX. (Panther....i refuse to let my G4 touch the internet, so no upgrading. That, plus, since i never let my G4 touch the internet, all my mac stuff never registered itself.)
No, not simple enough. My serial number for Reason is on the box somewhere in a New Orleans trash heap. OK, so call up Propellerhead Software, makers of Reason and explain my situation. Well, that would work if i had registered Reason when i bought it 5 years ago. I'm still using Reason 1.0 because i never registered it and had to ack-cray my own legit-store-bought opy-cay and couldn't upgrade ever.
Whatever, so i install it on my G4. I ack-cray it using my shady methods. Lo and behold, Reason does not run in OS X, but through Classic 9 environment. On top of that, my drivers for the sound card do not seem to run ASIO on the MAC as they do on the WinTel (unless someone can tell me where to find the drivers in OSX). I need to put a copy of the ASIO driver into Reason's folder labeled, "ASIO Drivers". Well that sucks.
That, plus i can't seem to find the acked-cray copy of Ableton Live 4.0 that my friend gave me. I would figure i'd rewire Reason through Ableton (like i'm doing on my WinTel Laptop right now) and just have Ableton act as an invisible/virtual mixer/router for Reason. But it doesnt help me if i cant find it. Also, i don't know how well Reason will ReWire to Ableton if Reason is running in Classic and Ableton doesnt run through classic.
My G4 is dual boot with OS 9.2. I'm figuring i have to install the drivers for 9,2 using 9.2 in order to get the sound card to work in that OS. But i don't want to have to do that because
1) I wanted to use OSX for a few reasons.
2) I don't want to install them in 9 and find out they fucked the drivers/card working in X
3) I don't know if all the other music software can even run in OS 9.
Le sigh.
And all i want is to get this shit working so i can book the shows that are fucking waiting for me. I have people itching to collaborate, and open doors waiting for monthly shows, and my creative juices flowing, and fucking technical dilemmas.
I know it doesnt help that back in the day i was a real 'tard about registering things. It's just that i was never into letting my main music computer touch the internet, so automatic registrations never got sent. And i always fill out registration cards and for some reason, never fucking mail them.
It also doesnt help that i'm poor and can't actually afford any of the programs that aren't technically mine. Hell, even this copy of Windows XP i'm using right now on this laptop isn't mine. This fucking laptop was given to me for free because i fixed it and if i couldnt fix it, the company was going to throw it out. That's why i'm pushing myself to learn Linux so quickly and adapt to open source software...if i can't afford shit, don't use shit that costs money.
But, i can't convert all my PCs to Linux until i get a working copy of Reason on my G4 so i don't lose about 50 unfinished songs that i'm working on that i absolutely need.
Help?
===================
All that, plus i just foolishly looked at some old pics of the SGnola crew and made myself fucking depressed again. And that reminded me of all the people i have no way of getting in touch with from N.O. that i really just wish i could see how they're doing. They probably hate me for never calling and saying 'good bye', and i hate myself for not doing the same thing before i lost all means of communications. And even if i did have a way to contact them, i don't even know if could bring myself to do it.
It doesn't help that iTunes somehow managed to 'randomly' select only tearjerkers for the last 4 or 5 songs.
