We put Dusty to sleep last night. The cancer was starting to cause him pain, and he would not eat unless someone sat by his bowl and stroked his head while he slowly chewed. We decided it was best to put him down before he started to suffer.
He was not scared, and I held him in my arms as they administered the drugs. My mother held his head, and he looked into her eyes the whole time. It seemed very peaceful and painless. The vets at the emergency hospital were incredibly kind. He is being cremated, and I doubt that a 10 pound dog will make many ashes, but some will go into a puppy urn, and some will be scattered into the ocean at my beach house.
He will be greatly missed, especially by my mother. As a stay at home mom with no children left at home, he was her loyal confidant and watch dog while my father was at work. We could not have asked for a better dog.
RIP Dusty
