I suppose I will make my return to posting and the SG world with a rant on Canada. Yes, the pressure has been building. A quick disclaimer: Some Canadian's are very cool and the mountains would kick more ass if I could actually afford to get to them (4 hours away and close to $4USD for a gallon of gas kills).
I have lived in Canada for over a year now working on my PhD. I am planning on leaving as soon as I am able. I have given Canada a chance (I should be specific, Western Canada), and now conclude that Canada, for the most part, and specifically Edmonton, can fuck off.
Im not even going to get into the fact that their shitty third world building codes resulted in my condo burning down last May, or that I have been the victim of more property violence and destruction than when I lived in Cleveland or D.C. (the latest was a homeless crackhead throwing a cinderblock through my window).
What takes the cake is this pervasive underlying rigidity. Everything has to be done by the rules, even if the rules are harmful or dont make sense. Each day I spend more time dealing with peoples anal rigidity and inability to think outside of the box. In fact, each morning when I wake up I now ask myself, what difficulties, bureaucracy, or incompetent workers will I encounter today?
Even in customer service situations, most people do not have the skills necessary to think in the abstract. "Yes, what if that plug really didnt fit in the socket." Or, Have you stopped for a moment and considered that the library website was down and that yesterday it indicated my books were renewed, yet you still choose to punish me because your pathetic (in the grand scheme of things) rule system doesnt account for the fact that most rules and systems are not perfect and need some interpretation once and awhile, or even a human heart.
People that have visited me have commented, without my prompting, that, People are sure rigid around here.
I wont even get into the fact that most artists or culture that existed here fled while they still had any remaining bit of life or sparkle left within them. And no, the stroll of poets and that one group organized by that 40 year old unemployed Dungeons and Dragons dungeon master burnout is not considered good poetry. However, I forgot that most here wouldnt know if it was.
All I need to say here is that the banking system in Ghana is better.
Maybe its the cold numbing peoples brains senseless, because sense is exactly what seems to be missing. I have also discovered that beneath this fake niceness that locals portray, is a cold-hearted fuck you. After moving here it only took me a few days to discover that, Oh surry really means fuck off but I dont have the nuts to actually say it to your face so I will be a spineless little bitch and pretend to be nice to you, because that is what our national ethos demands. Yes, the politeness fools visitors, but not the rest of us.
I give Vancouver a few points and Montreal is OK too. The remainder of Canada is quite unfortunate to say the least.
All right. I will stop now. Thanks, I had to get that out of my system. I am really not a hateful or negative guy. I think it is something within the system that seems to be trickling down to the people around here. Anyway, needless to say, Edmonton has taken a fat shit in my mouth and I refuse to take it anymore.
Be happy!!
