I saw someone comment on a friend's Facebook update wherein she was pleasantly surprised that she was doing well financially. This friend of a friend asserted that the only reason my friend was pleased was that she had been conditioned to feel that money was a good thing.
And yes, in theory I can agree. But when money is what creates insulation from starvation, homelessness, permanent disability or death from barred access to medical care, it's hard to be so evolved as to believe that cash isn't king.
In agrarian societies, a good rainy season followed by a good harvest, a well-stocked pantry- these things would provide the comfort and security people craved. And in fact, isn't desire for that security a function of evolution? Wouldn't the desire to create a modicum of wealth insure the propagation of future generations?
I'm no Gordon Gecko nor am I disparaging the ideal of self-actualization and claiming happiness and tranquility independent of material successes. But the idea that money doesn't bring with it comfort is obsurd.
"Everyone needs money. That's why they call it money."
Unrelated survey question:
If you had to assign me a ringtone, what would it be?
