I was cleaning and found this free form prose. I wrote it in '98. I still like it.
A silent night's slumber shattered by sleeplessness,
Insomnia and I stared out into dark-cool space, thinking,
Motion caught my eye, curiosity threw it to home plate,
Straining to see what had moved I saw it coming toward me,
A black dragon floated near the ceiling,
A little dragon the length of my arm,
A snake with wings,
Her body was made of jagged lines of shadow,
Her movements choppy like a bad stop-motion film,
She looked as if she were made of cuts in the air,
The dragon "moved"? down next to my ear,
She whispered in a way that I knew no one else could hear,
Breathy seductive words danced on my cheek,
To the music of her black featureless face,
"Edward my boy, rise into action, there is much to do,
I know where there is a treasure that makes dreams come true!,
Go to a place where only pirates meet,
Then ride across the sea,
Then find a cave between a giant's feet,
There the treasure be."
Though I didn't trust the void-black face,
I somehow knew truth was her whisper,
Opportunity her breath,
I rose quietly not to wake my girlfriend,
Sidestepping shadows on the ground I made for the door,
By my closet the dragon told me what I'd need,
"Clothes and maps for treasure to catch,
A razor sharp blade and wits to match."
With my supplies together I stopped and thought,
Was I forgetting something, something I needed,
"One thing missing and pay a cost,
One thing missing and the treasure lost."
Taking her seriously I thought about it,
Sleepy thoughts, dreams of success, I could think of nothing missing,
We left to a hidden cove near Malibu,
The dragon slid the directions into my skull,
We found pirates jolly and laughing,
Their laughs sounded like clinking champagne glasses,
On telling them where I was going they smiled,
An agreement was made for part of the booty,
Before I knew it we set sail into the night,
"Course is set, and on a true bead,
But to get there in time we need more speed."
I started shouting orders to my pirate compatriots,
Stolen rubies in the ship's hold were taken up on deck,
Under my instructions we started weaving them together,
Before long a ruby sail was raised,
It caught the moonlight and pushed the ship at the speed of light,
We skipped across the ocean like a tomboy dancing in puddles,
Standing there I looked to the sail,
The moonlight licked off of it and swaggered down to my eye,
It's black but red twinkling light smelt like exotic food,
Never tasted but always tempting,
The motion of the sail was like two new lovers,
Not knowing where to be hard,
Where to be soft,
And there it was again,
The feeling that something was wrong,
Looking about the ship something seemed missing,
Was I forgetting something, something I needed,
My little dragon repeated her warning,
"One thing missing and pay a cost,
One thing missing and the treasure lost."
Taking her seriously I thought about it,
Comrades laughing, dreams of adventure, I could think of nothing missing,
Finally at the island the pirates and I parted,
They choose to keep the fine sail as payment,
The dragon and I went on alone,
A giant's child was on the island,
Sitting in front of the cave, fist on cheek,
I asked him what was wrong,
Bored and hyper, loving but alone,
Remembering that the pirates had left behind a barrel,
I went back to the shore with tools to wield,
Twisting and nailing, breaking and gluing,
I returned with a giant top, the mother of all toys,
Smiling with glee the giant began to play,
Unblocking the way to the cave,
I stopped to hope that my future wife and I,
If marriage is in my deck,
Would never leave such a happy child alone,
And there it was again,
The feeling that something was wrong,
Thinking about the scenario something seemed missing,
Was I forgetting something, something I needed,
My little dragon reminded me,
"One thing missing and pay a cost,
One thing missing and the treasure lost."
Taking her seriously I thought about it,
Children playing, dreams of fun, I could think of nothing missing,
We continued together into the cave,
The dragon had indeed spoke true,
Gold and gems and platinum chains,
Jade and coins and silver cups,
As gleefully as the child had,
I began to grin and laugh with joy,
If only my girlfriend could see this...
Time bent, space folded, neurons snapped into place,
Of course that's what was missing,
How could I start an adventure without her,
Good or bad, long or short, important or not,
Who else would I want to watch a ruby sail with,
Light cascading down it like shooting stars,
Stars trying to reach Earth to kiss it,
Who else would appreciate the magic in a child's eyes,
Magical eyes seeing a new toy for the first time,
The magic you find in puppies and gadgets,
You find it in dancing around silly-like and senseless fun,
Or beating a game for the first time, or learning something new,
Who else would I want to share this moment with,
A moment of joy and mere discovery,
Of simple accomplishment and dreams come true,
I looked at my shadowy guide's void-black face,
I realized for the first time it wasn't a void,
I just couldn't see black on black,
I couldn't see the black knowing smile,
Or the black motherly eyes, or the black wrinkles of wisdom,
But now somehow I knew they were there,
As if multiple epiphanies were it's food the dragon grew,
No longer jagged and small, but large and flowing,
Like icy smoke she enveloped me,
Holding me like the cold dead arms of a mother's corpse,
We lifted off on ether wings of infinite size,
I saw the giant child wave good bye,
I shared his joyful smile,
Shooting across the sea I saw the pirates,
I sang along with their jaunty tune and laughed,
Finally I slithered between the window shades,
Into the apartment's bedroom,
"Stories leaving more questions than answers are goodhearted,
While well intentioned adventures leave you were you started."
And with that the little black dragon left,
There in bed she slept and dreamed with a small smile,
I saw her by the coming dawn light that skipped through the shades,
What did I see in her smile?
Sleepy thoughts and dreams of success,
Comrades laughing and dreams of adventure,
Children playing and dreams of fun,
Looking at her I could think of nothing missing,
And that is how I found "the treasure that makes dreams come true!",
In the smile of a woman,
I haven't found yet.
