I am going to use my space today to comment on a thread that can be found here. It regards a news item submitted to SG, which describes an Alabama legislator's attempt to get "God Bless America" on the state license plate.
I guess I should make comments on the actual thread itself, but I don't feel like defending Alabama to people who have already made up their minds, thinking Alabama is home to a bunch of "web footed rednecks". And, there are already many postings that point out the things I was going to say anyway. However, I really feel like I need to get some of this off my chest.
Alabama is FAR from perfect, I know. But I think it's sad that when the state makes news, it's for stupid stuff like this. Or Judge Roy Moore and his 10 Commandments monument. They may be sensational news stories, but I find them to be isolated incidents, and not representative of the state as a whole.
I guess I am tired of being sterotyped, that everyone from Alabama must be a NASCAR loving, cousin marrying, Bible thumping, uneducated redneck. Those of you who live in the south already know that this is NOT TRUE. I wish stories like the one above were filed with a disclaimer: "The actions taken by this state representative do not reflect the beliefs, opinions or preferences of all his constituents, and should not be held to reflect upon the state of Alabama as a whole. "

That's pretty much a southern stereotype. It's sad when the media only focuses on kooky southern people, and totally ignores what a unique and diverse culture there is down here.
