I love Bond films.
Plain and simple, no matter how shit the movie I will love something about it.
The Connery era was amazing, the films were gritty but with a hint of humour and Bond came accros and man who was suave and sophisticated but also a man who you don't fuck with. Films like "Goldfinger" and "From Russia With Love" were astoundingly good pieces of cinema and are films I've watched dozens of times, literaly, without ever getting bored of.
"OHMSS" was good, there's no denying it, it was an excellent movie. Problem was, Lazenby wasn't old Sean. While he played Bond very well, people were used to Connery in the role and were put off by the fact that it wasn't him in the role. Heck, Telly Savalas as Blofeld? Genius! It's a real shame people site this as their least favourite Bond film as it's far better than most of Moore's work.
So, on to Moore. Oh dear me, how it all went wrong. "Live and Let Die", "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "For Your Eyes Only" were great, the rest were either mediocre or, in the case of "Moonraker" and "A View to a Kill" (Which did have an awesome theme song mind you), fucking awful. The horrific descent into self-parody acutally hurt to watch after the awesomeness of LaLD with one of my favourite exchanges in a Bond film
Mr. Big: Is THIS the stupid mother who tailed you uptown?
James Bond: There seems to be some mistake. My name is...
Mr. Big: Names is for tombstones, baby! Y'all take this honkey out and WASTE HIM! NOW!
Classic!
My least favourite moment in a Bond film? Why that woul be in "Moonraker" when he plays the theme of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" to open the door on the fucking Space Station!
In his favour, Moore also had the Union Jack parachute scene in TSWLM, which rates as one of the greatest moments in cinamatic history, so he comes out average.
Dalton, eh? What the hell were they thinking? The man was a great Bond, but following the cheese-fest of AVtaK with the far more grim Bond that Dalton portrayed. They brought the franchise back to a place far more in keeping with the Connery movies but at the same time the sudden departure from Moore's tongue in cheek antics pretty much killed the series. A shame really, I rather liked Dalton as Bond.
Then on to the Brosnan era. Goldeneye wa spectacular, there's no other way to describe it. It had a stellar cast, an awesome theme song and a great plot. It really hit the nail on the head and was the closest thing to a Connery film since, well, Connery was in a Bond film.
However......
It was then followed up by "Tomorrow Never Dies", which had the one of the weakest excuses for a villain ever. A guy who wanted the media rights in China. Jeez, that's aiming high, I mean it only comes just after someone tried to destabilise the economies of entire countries in the last film. I just didn't like it at all.
"The World is Not Enough", excellent song, cack film. Iffy plot and fecking awful villain. Robert Carlyle can play scary guys, look at his role in "Craker", but his turn in this was more of a wet squib.
Then we reach "Die Another Day", which I thought was going to kill the franchise in a similar manner to "Batman & Robin". The opening scene was great and I loved the juxtaposition between the Madonna theme and the torture scenes in the opening credits. Hi escape from the hospital was great as well, pity is started to slide so soon after. The plot swiftly descended into nonsensical sci-fi, with people having their DNA altered and weird "dream machines" and battle armour that controlled laser satellites. There were decent scenes, but they just didn't mesh well into a complete movie.
Casino Royale.
I went in with high expectations, the trailer had pretty much made me want to love this film. The opening scene was brutal, it really set the scene for this new, hard-ass Bond.
No female silhouettes in the opening credits, just a figure kicking ass. This seems interesting. Then the film proper kicks off with a chase scene from my wildest dreams. I shan't say much more other than this.
It is my favourite Bond film
