Today was my birthday. Since I began working at age 16, I have only had my birthday off four times. Today was no different as we are still rolling out our new menu, plus I was given the honor of planning, preparing, execution of and honoring a remembrance dinner for our SA who passed. I prepared a tempura cauliflower, a Mediterranean pasta, sliced sirloin with bourbon sweet potatoes and a homemade marshmallow, and shrimp tacos. It was a 3 hour dinner with his family and our restaurant family. And I think he would have liked it .
Being a part of his dinner, creating a wonderful memory from a tragedy, I can honestly say that this may be one of my top three birthdays ever.
Some may not understand. But this is who I am. This is why I have a passion for food. I can't celebrate my own birth, when someone whose family is hurting, I can possibly help ease the pain. I can celebrate tomorrow. Or the next. Joey's family cannot.
