Ok, So we got back from our 1200 mile round trip drive to the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.
For being a mostly jam-band festival it fucking rocked!!
4 days of drinking, smoking, listening to music, and watching hippies is great.
We bought VIP passes, because with 80,000 people camping together we wanted to real close to the show. And we were!
While some people in general admission had a mile walk, we where 200 yards from the main stage.
We arrived thursday afternoon, and got placed next to a few groups of people our age. We all started drinking and helped each other set up our little community camp site. I knew we where at a hippie festival when as soon as we were all done setting up our neighbor asks me, "Hey, you wanna smoke a bowl?" Of Course! Let's get this show on the road!
This years' fest wasn't all jam.
There was indie rock: Bright Eyes, Death Cab, the Magic Numbers, Sonic Youth, Stephen Malkmus, Beck, Radiohead.
Hip-hop: Lyrics Born, Common, Blackalicious, the Streets.
And some reggae and world music I didn't check out.
Friday's highlight was definetly the late night hip-hop set. Lyrics Born, Common, and Blackalicious played from Midnight to 3:30 in the morning.
Saturday was one highlight after another. First Elvis Costello and the Imposters, with Allen Toussaint and the Crescent City Horns. They played a large block of Allen's New Orleans jazz songs, then a group of Elvis' classic songs like "Allison", and "Watching the Detectives", complete with horns and organ. It was damn near religious.
Next was Beck.
He played a song or two of of each album, and put on a crazy show. There was a marianet copy of his band on stage with them, there where rapping/fighting bears, giant boomboxes, and a fucking hilarious anti-hippie short film featuring the Beck and crew puppets.
And since he won't play "Loser" in concert he let the puppets perform to the CD.
He did however cover "Do you Realise?" by The Flaming Lips, and "Creep" by Radiohead.
Finaly was Radiohead. There entire set was a highlight, not to mention they played like 8 new songs.
Sunday was more chill. The weather cooled down and it was nice to just stroll around. I finally got to see Sonic Youth. That was awesome just for the history.
Another highlight of the fest in general was I smoked Opium for the first (and second) time.
Daaaamn it was chill. It'll get you in the mood for interacting with hippies for sure.
It was a great time, but I am glad to be home taking a hot shower.
