I went kayaking on the Mississippi today, to make sure I've got all the necessary gear and expectations to take me through next weekend. I'll be kayaking 44 miles downstream as a benefit for the Friends of the Mississippi River.
If anyone would like to sponsor me, you can do so at the website. Email me for info. And this is by no means required of friends, but you would be helping out a valuable natural resource..
I'm going to be a safety captain..basically, I get to carry a 2 way radio and wear an orange vest and get to answer questions and hand out bandaids. I signed up for that distinction because it's a quick way to meet people.
..none of my friends paddle..yet..
Anyway, today as I was paddling through north Minneapolis, I found a yellow rose with red tips floating on the surface..then another..then another..someone had let go a whole dozen of these roses in the river. One was floating next to a dead carp, which was perhaps the statement this person was trying to make by throwing the roses into the river in the first place.

If there was a canoe/kayak group, I would certainly join. I doubt there are a ton of members here with our hobby, but at least no one will be a lilly-dipper on the threads
I pretty much kayak solo too. My only reliable partner went and moved to Spain. There are some decent coastal paddles in southern California where I live, but the coast is so developed here . . . the best coastal kayaking in CA is in the northern part of the state. I've been out there just once, near Mendocino. There are awesome sea caves there.
