Lots of stuff happened to me in the last thirty six hours.
Friday morning i took a drive down to Dakota, MN on the Mississippi River to go kayaking with my friend. She spends her summers there in a barn she's converting into a house. The drive was beautiful..the fog hovered over the river until about noon, when it lifted to reveal the most perfect weather for paddling.
We decided to wait until afternoon to head out, though, and did some work on the barn. This year's project is to make the hayloft livable..so far, she's had living space for her and her daughter in the ground level. We hauled furniture, plugged mouse-sized holes, batproofed.
When we finally went out in the kayaks, we crossed the main channel and poked around in Lake Onalaska for a few hours. We saw an entire family of river otters! They were on their way somewhere, but took time to play along the way. There was a flock of about three hundred pelicans on a sandbar, and when something gathered their attention, three hundred bigbig beaks would swivel in the same direction. Breathtaking..and they make a noise that sounds like the offspring of a zipper and a trombone.
This was also the first time I've used my new paddle while paddling with someone. I can go fast fast fast with it! I'm so much more comfortable using the greenland stick rather than a traditional euro (spoon-shaped) paddle.
Came back to the house just as a neighbor brought over a bottle of gin, a bottle of tonic, and a couple of limes. Proceeded to have a great dinner and a night of good conversation.
This morning, along with the hangover came rain and a bit more helping around the house. Eventually got to sit around with my friend and have some coffee. She was my professor/faculty advisor in college, but now we're more friends than anything. We talked about grad school for me..and I think i'm going to do it. I want to have slides shot by the end of the summer. Which means I need to suck it up and get my ass into the studio so I have some work to take slides.
THIS is why they call it work. 'Cuz it's hard.
She also asked me to write a letter of recommendation for her upcoming shot at a promotion. Wow. What an honor. I'm very, very flattered.
Now I'm off to try something I've never done before, studio-wise.
Wish me luck!

I was going to make a comment about Figlio's and read your journal... but it's too long, and it's too late.
