I find it strange how unaffected I was by watchin that gig last night.
The last time I was down at the Queen E, it was for Camper Van Beethoven and Modest Mouse, and I left that building in a supercharged state which seemed to last for weeks.
I remember at times drifting off into thoughts of work etc during that last gig and then forcing myself to come back to the present to really enjoy the moment of those notes, and by the time Modest Mouse were half way through their gig, I was completely engrossed.
Last night, the opening act was a guy that was a 5 piece band unto himself. Drum sensors on his shoes for a tapdance bass drum, high-hat on the toe tap. 5 pads on his chest and stomach for a gorilla chest beating drum solo, two keyboards draped over his shoulders and a synthesizer mike for guitar solos. The first song was entertaining .. in an interesting sorta "oh that's interesting, hmm, very talented" way. The second song... well, still a bit interesting, but kinda heavy in the cheezy 80's rock sorta way. Halfway through the 3rd song I think, and I was out on the patio with a beer in hand, smoking. Le Tigre was next.
Ok, Le Tigre was pure unadulterated fun. Those two women and that guy were totally explosive on stage with their supercamp choreography, and they obviously loved being up there. During one song the guy took over the mic and yes I am admitting I did not do my research. Man that guy has a high voice, I have listened to the band a lot on Music Match, and I recognize that voice, but I always in my head attributed it to the leadsinger brunette. Hey waiiit a minute dude, I think your tensor bandages are slipping, HEY WAAAIIIT A MINUTE!
Oh. You arent a boy at all!
Yes, I made it until last night before realizing that Le Tigre is actually 3 women. You got me.
Anyways, they were a lot of fun and I wish they stayed on stage longer. That was a short set.
Then Beck.
What was the matter with me? By the second song, I was completely dis-interested. I think with Modest Mouse, the supercharged state I picked up was dripping off the band. The energy and the love of what they were doing totally showed and I sucked it up. Beck, last night, albeit a good stage show, just didnt really seem to be there. I liked the sound, I like the songs, but for some reason, about half way through, I felt I was being fed a microwaved dinner twice heated. Canned, planned, and you guys can jump around all you want, but I think youre bored.
It just wasnt there, so at 11:00, neither was I.
I didnt leave in a ok fuck. Im outta here. state, I just decided that I had by then seen the show, and I had to get up early, and I wasnt going to miss anything by not seeing the last couple of songs. It was ok, but the energy seemed to be flowing in the wrong direction.
So there. Theres my Thursday night. Heres my Friday morning, and over there is the shower I should be in right about now. Gotta get my camping gear together, its going to be a great weekend.
