Ow.
Owie.
Neck.
Hurts.
Stiff..
Last night was the Michael Moore Movie Night at lavinias place. I had a great time even though I totally mismanaged my time throughout the prep of Saturday leading up to the evening. By the time 5:30 rolled around I should have been finished most of the cooking. NOT waking up from a nap. As I was looking over the recipe again for the Tomato/ginger chutney I was going to make, it became clear to me that there would be no way for me to be able to get it made on time in my own kitchen. I would have to pack up all my ingredients, blender, spices etc and rush over to lavinias early.
I also bought 16 heads of garlic to roast. Pack the tinfoil.
I show up there at 6:00 and realize instantly how strange it is to try to cook stuff in other peoples kitchens. R bought me the most beautiful and amazing knife a few years ago for a Christmas present. Its a big Henkel, Professional S 8 chefs knife, and I realized that I have been completely spoiled by that thing.
Chopping onions and mincing garlic and ginger with a smaller, serrated blade was surprisingly difficult.
No matter, 6:40, I finally got all the Roma tomatoes cut in halves, brushed with olive oil, salt and pepper and put into the preheated 350 degree oven. In 45 minutes, the rest of the stuff should be done and ready, and Ill remove the roasted tomatoes to pulse in with the sun dried tomatoes, which are currently soaking, honey, balsamic vinegar, garlic, ginger, onion, cinnamon, cayenne, and cumin mix.. People will be showing up a little bit after 7, so I should be just finishing up on all of it at that point in time, the chutney can sit for an hour in the fridge while I roast all that garlic. Man thats a lot of garlic. Lavinia mixes me up one of these great drinks I kinda tripped across last week: Tom Collins mix using tonic water instead of club soda and gin. She makes it a double.
Bzzzzzz. Its 7:20 now. The first people have just buzzed. Ahh! Its hethral! Cool, this is coming together. I check on my tomatoes, as theyve been in there for almost an hour now, but for some reason dont appear to be roasting very well. The light is still on on the oven, but . wtf?... I open the oven door to check them again, and notice that it doesnt feel very hot in there. I turn down the oven temp just to see when the light that signifies the element is on goes out. I turn it all the way down to 175 before it goes out.
The oven is totally not working. Uh oh.
angelvanilla and fenris23 show up next, more food which is very good because I dont know if we are going to be eating any of this stuff. Fenris says something about fuses and we check the ovens fuse panel. The label is mostly faded away to nothing, and what is still legible is written strictly in French. 400lbgorilla shows up next, bringing a huge thing of hot wings. Oh yeah!
Anyways, I am apparently not a handyman. I very quickly admit defeat. There will be no chutney. (in actuality, I find myself a bit relieved, as its stressful cooking for other people, especially something you dont really make what if it totally sucked?)
Pica_pica? Oh yeah, hes the one that makes the shitty food.
Bzzzzzz
s_eldorado is here! Yay! He totally saves the day by not only isolating which fuse it was, but then actually running out to buy a replacement. He Rocks!
(which, unfortunately removed my excuse for not being able to finish making this stuff)
5lave made a brief appearance to drop off some movies, but unfortunately couldnt stay.
It was fun though. We watched The Corporation first, which lasted all the way past midnight, and in hindsite, I am not sure copious amounts of food and booze goes very well with documentaries.
I heard something which sounded vaguely reminiscient of snoring, and sure enough, we had 400lbs of napping going on:
I believe Fenris23 snuck a quick one in there too, but I cant be positive because I think I was in mid nap myself. I dont recall falling asleep, but I remember being surprised about waking up. It was 1:00 and we put in Canadian Bacon. I got myself a glass of wine, sat down on the couch to watch the movie, lavinia sat on the floor in front of me, her back resting against the couch, and I just kinda lean back a bit.. very comfy.
The next thing I know, I am opening my eyes and its bright. I am still sitting on the couch in the exact same position I was in watching the movies, but Im confused. The apartment is empty of people. Its sunny. Somebody stuffed my mouth with dry oatmeal and cotton and I feel like Ive had a tonsillectomy overnight. I look at my watch. 7:30am. The coffee table is clean of dishes, it doesnt look like we had a party here. I sit up. OOOooo, stiff neck.
wheres lavinia?... oh, shes over there in her bed.
I could sleep through anything. Apparently everybody left at around 4:00 am or something like that, but I obviously didnt stir. Reminds me of the time I was sleeping over at an old girlfriends place back in Calgary.
We had left a candle burning beside the bed. It was in a plastic candle holder, and we put it on the top of her wooden bookshelf.
Why anybody would make a plastic candle holder is beyond me, but we fell asleep. The candle burned down, first melting and eventually igniting the plastic, which then spilled out in a flaming toxic puddle across the top of the bookshelf, plumes of black smoke ensued, setting off the fire alarm and waking everybody. Monica jumps out of bed, her room mate and her brother come storming into the room and they beat the flames out with wet towels. There is panic, screaming, smoke alarms, thick black smoke, snoring, ..
I woke up in the morning, my lungs thick with black goop, the roof blacked and the top 3 feet of the walls black.
WHAT THE? I said. What happened?!
Monica was PISSED. wouldnt you like to know.
Well last night, apparently lavinia tried to wake me, but I obviously would have none of that. I had to boogie outta there pretty quick, as the Morgster was probably wondering where the hell I was.
I come home to find that hes redecorated the apartment with the full bag of trash I had stupidly left out the night before. I didnt give him shit though. I just felt a little bad.
Anyways, its Mothers day. I have plenty to say about that but I am going to say nothing. It would just come off as being all mopey and lame, and I had a great time last night. I dont want to end that story with a long winded soliloquy about the loss of so many mothers. Sometimes I wish I could be in Calgary on mothers day though, Ive never been able to put flowers on her grave as an adult. If I could even find her grave.

Awesome to see you last night too. We've gotta connect way more often - I really enjoy you guys.
Yep, long day - one before that too and another tomorrow starting tomoroww early. Oh well, I get to rest come the end of the week and possibly even go to Prom. How I'm loving that idea!
