Oh god I hope I haven't totally fucked up my Xbox.
Being the geek that I am, I got heavy into the idea of being able to run Linux on an xbox. Of course, I didn't even own an Xbox at the time, but the idea never left me and on occasion I would go off on some fast worded speel to R about how cool that would be.
Enter christmas 2002. Under the tree out there in the valley was a present that was surprisingly familiar... about the same size, I sneak down on christmas eve and pick it up... yup same weight.
Then finally, after dinner on Christmas day, we go down to unwrap the presentsSure enough, she got me an Xbox!
That was a little over 2 years ago now, and the fact that I would have to open up the thing and solder on a modchip was something I never wanted to do. If I totally screwed it up and rendered it unusable, she would be totally upset because it was my christmas present. Even if I went out and bought another one, it wouldn't be the same.
So I've waited all this time to take this case apart.
I've been having problems with it playing some of my DVD's and Games, some of the disks are a little bit scratched, so uh.. I er...
I wanted to make uh "back-ups" of my Xbox games with my PC er ... just in case my original disc gets taken back to the rental.. er I mean .. in case I lose or wreck the original disc which I legitimately purchased of course.
Well, as it turns out, the Xbox will not play backups as it is out of the box, and in order to actually copy the game off the Xbox onto your computer, you need to get into its ftp ability, or network it somehow to your computer. All of this requires the addition of a mod chip.
Since Ive been doing this 12 day cleanse, (day 8 now, feeling groovy) Ive been filled with a couple of things. 1: a real sense of peace for some unknown reason, as though some strange lavender coloured funnel cloud touched down in secret on the top of my skull and injected some new form of life into me. And 2: an insatiable level of energy to do stuff hobby stuff, or cleaning, or re-organizing, or going to the gym,.
So I guess thats what prompted me to find a mod chip retailer here yesterday.
All last night I sat here pouring over about a dozen different Xbox mod sites, trying to glean enough information to get this done right, and my Xbox is currently in about 14 different pieces around the living room and I am just about to put it all back together.
Gulp. Please boot.
