Written yesterday in my notebook:
It seems Montreal is a constant reminder of everything that sux culturally about the U.S. It's not that people here are overall nicer or cooler or smarter. But in general they seem happier and healthier. Like they don't feed the monster of misery, denial, and bitterness I see in the people back home. It occurred to me as i was walking through the park that I've likely seen less than 5 obese people in the city (as memory serves, I saw one.) I've seen one McDonalds and a few pizzarias. I've seen more coffee shops (many privately owned) than I can count. My chai was so light, and in general the staple of fast foods is salads or sandwiches.
I don't speak a word of French. Damn!
I'm in a park. No clue really where. I think I'm north of the hostel and what may have been the old city. The number of people on bikes is, well... Inspiring. There were a few volleyball nets, numerous dog-walkers, picnickers, and a great big gathering of older folks for some game that involves throwing balls on the ground(around a target?) It looks familiar... Then i saw the crawd that had caught my attention. or should I say the theater? Lo and behold - I came just in time for Montreal's 5th annual International Tango Festival and tonight is one of two free shows. It's a small theatre that likely rivals Reading's Bandshell in capacity, but is muc more like a miniature version of the Tweeter Center.
Did I mention it's a Thursday? !!!!
[Someone started a slow-clap in the crowd at a TANGO concert.]
