Went to a reading by Norman Mailer and Paul Krassner (one of the original Merry Pranksters) last night. Pretty extraordinary stuff. Both men are considered founders of literary journalism ("new" journalism, "gonzo" journalism), which has been a focus of mine since my early undergrad days, when I was still struggling to write basic leads and hard news articles for shitty beats (city council reporting, for instance). Courageous is the best word to describe these fellows. They say what they believe, what they feel, regardless of the consquences, and that is why their works of journalism, discounted by many as "fictional", resonate so strongly with me. This isn't FOX news trite, people, this is the raw truth.
It was interesting to watch the ultra-conservatives in the audience steadily trickle out of the auditiorium as the reading progressed....
