i've been reading this book about james tilly matthews. he was a tea merchant in the 1700s who went completely mad, and told people he was trying to broker a peace between france and great britain, but a gang of seven who controlled a machine he called the air loom were keeping him from succeeding.
funny thing was, he in fact had spent time going back and forth between french and british dignitaries trying to broker some sort of peace. the stress of the task brought out his up to that point buried schizophrenia.
it's called the air loom gang. goes off on tangents now and then, but a pretty good book, i think.
