Just got off the phone with my mother for the first time after the Hurricane. I had received some bits of info here and there via my brother, but hadn't heard from my parents directly. I had no idea it was that bad where they are, which is about 30 miles north of Gulfport. They don't have water pressure, won't have power for 3 or 4 weeks, there is no food or water anywhere...there are generators but no gasoline to run them...she says relief trucks drive by and never stop, and apparently aren't stopping at the coast either. Luckily they are safe and their house is okay, even though they lost their shed/garage and lots of huge trees in their front yard were uprooted. If they can get gasoline into their car they are going to leave for a while...they are down to eating one meal a day since they only have a few cans of food and a bathtub filled with water left (gas is still on, surprisingly, so they can boil water). They sure picked a hell of a time to move across the country...I think they've been there less than 3 weeks...
They get hit with a hurricane, I get hit with a taxi cab. Damn, we're having a fun week.
Updat 09/04/05: I've tried to call my parents' cell phones a few times in the past couple of days with no success. Just a recorded message that "due to the hurricane" my call can't be completed. Hopefully they will call if they decide to leave and stay with relatives further north, which is what my brother and I advised them to do... but apparently there have been looting problems in Gulfport and Biloxi, and I have a feeling my dad will be reluctant to leave his brand new home... Did some Google searching for info on their town and it looks like they are trying to get power restored to the water pumps, but every single powerline is down in the entire county so the chances of my parents getting electricty in their house is slim... It seems the eye passed just to the east of them, with winds between 60 and 130 mph for 8 hours...
