Just read Cherry's post about the biodiversity museum and her upcoming trip to the Yukon and it made think of my grandfather. He was a prospector, miner and at one time an MLA while my mother's family lived in Mayo. So I googled his name just to see what came up and I found this amazing page with a recording of him speaking out about a proposed closure of the Hospital in Mayo back in 1961. Needless to say it's amazing to hear his voice several years after his death and I have no shame in telling you I'm both laughing and crying while I listen to him state his arguments for keeping the Hospital open.
Ornery old bastard! Haha! Listening to this I'm reminded of how much he loved to debate and argue and how passionate he was. He always fought for the people and would've been right up front and centre in the Occupy Movement if he were still here and he would've certainly given them a solid direction and purpose. He rarely ever gave in.
Here's to you Grandpa Ray, I miss you everyday but I carry you with me every time I argue for my clients, the poor, destitute and homeless of Victoria and every time I use reason and evidence to state my case.
If I can at all be judged as a decent man today, it's because you were my hero. RIP
