Had an exchange with hollygolightly from new zealand (soon to be from new york) that went like this:
She asked: what do you teach? i am currently teaching creative writing at a university. (not as impressive as it sounds), while i am completing my masters degree in creative writing
He responded: I teach writing to professionals, who should by this point in their lives know how to write better than they do. It's a lot of fun, but I suspect your students are a livelier bunch than mine.
he wrote: An aside: you and I joined the SG site at about the same time, so maybe your experiences are similar to mine. I've seen some amazing writing here . . . gut-wrenching, thought-provoking, impossibly comic and deeply moving. I really think there's material here for a book. Any thoughts along these lines?
in response:
she said: you know what, i would almost have to disagree... i don't see a very high quality of prose on sg. sure it's entertaining and it has its moments of beauty, but in general i can't really imagine it being in a book. but that's just me.
he said: perhaps you're right . . . I suspect what I'm reacting to is the raw emotion I sometimes see here . . . it's like the kind of narrative Jack Kerouac used in "On the Road," with the same kind of sometimes-nervous energy mixed with lust mixed with self-awareness. It's not something I'm able to contribute to, but as you say, it's entertaining.
I was surprised: I have seen some awesome writing and some journals that would be worthy of global exposure: they were smart, kind, cutting, harsh, heartbreaking, and incredibly inspiring.
So my journal question, based on my exchange with hollygolightly, is:
If you think just about the SG journal entries, do you think men (or boys, if applicable) see SG journal entries from a different perspective then women (or girls) ? If so, how?
Do you think the SG journals would be a source for a cultural or sexual anthropologist to turn to when defining our cultural and sexual heritage in 2005?
And Sky, I hope you're right: you said if I posted a new journal I could still access my old journal responses. I sure hope so; that's where I have my responses to the kisses question.
