Oh how the mighty have fallen!
I came home from work tonight and fed Webster as usual. He wolfed it down as usual.
However, as I made my tea, he stayed with me in the kitchen. Even stranger when I carried it through on a tray into the front room to eat whilst watching TV he didn't follow me in? Most odd. In fact he was sat in the kitchen in full on "Chat Noir" mode glaring at the dfont room door.
I took his bag of fishy treats and lured him into the front room. Most out of charachter when finished eating he curled up underneath the Computer chair where I sit now.
I was sat in the arm chair writing off his oddness as a phase, when slowly creeping along the edge of the room was a Shrew!
The penny dropped. He'd obviously caught the critter this afternoon and brought it back stunned. It had come to and sprung away (perhaps it bit him?) hiding under the sofa.
Upon my seeing the rodent I picked him up and plonked him down in front of the TV where it had crawled underneath.
"Go to it boy, show him what you're made of!"
Nothing . NADA.
Webster turned tail and slunked off, trying to look nochelant as possible giving off a "I could catch the damn thing but I'm just gripped with this great Ennui" vibe.
Off the shrew shot back under the sofa.
"C'mon boy there he is got get him"
Nothing . NADA.
I tried to drive the poor little critter towards the reluctant Nimrod to no avail.
It bolted underneath the door and into the hall. one of the door mats had curled up making a tunnel that looked just like the sort of thing that would be a des res for a startlled shrew.
As I stepped on the other sturdier foot wiping map I heard a stifled tiny squeak that told me that the curled mat was not the Shrews home from home.
I pealed back the welcome mat expecting the worst.
There was no gore but the poor little bugger was dead as a doormouse.
On with the rubber gloves and out to the bin. Not before dangling the expired beast before Webster's puzzled nose.
I hope that this will allay his fears that I am a crap hunter and reduce his nocturnal safaris?
