First: I'm not sure I like the new front page layout I'm seeing on SG.... Not so pretty. A little too utilitarian.

Now, about my last entry... I've gained some perspective since I made that post. While it's still true that I sometimes think about quitting one or all of my shows, I had to face what every comic has to face: Sometimes, you're just gonna bomb. Sometimes you're gonna have a nightmare gig. Sometimes you're gonna be completely off when you most desperately need to be "on". And you just have to get past it. Can't let it beat you.

It'd be a different deal if I did the karaoke show just like every other hacky asshole does his show, robotically calling people up, pressing play, pressing stop and admonishing the crowd to applaud, then starting all over again. Those guys put nothing of themselves on the line. They don't say the things they want to, don't make the jokes, don't crack on the shitty singers, don't do anything REAL. They risk NOTHING. And the people that go to those shows are just as bankrupt, risking nothing, doing the same old songs, the same old "I sing badly to be funny" bits, the same attention whoring.

My show is almost ALL risk. I risk beatings, getting fired and everything else, and the listeners (the true heroes) risk getting made fun of in front of a room full of people. In the end, when it works, it's magic. The kind of magic you'll NEVER find at the other suckass shows. But when it doesn't work, it ends up the same car wreck that other comedy shows are when their hosts or comics aren't getting along with the audience. It's painful for everyone in the room.

Luckily, it works a whole lot more often than it doesn't, and we actually get some comedy and some music done, and everyone goes home happy. But I've gotta keep in mind that sometimes, there are going to be people trying to derail the show, and I've just got to roll on and blow them off. Likewise, if you hear people being assholes at the show, like yelling this and that while I'm singing (for instance), feel free to heckle THEM. Let them feel what it's like to suffer consequences for their behavior.

Time for me to hit the sack and get fueled up for the Saturday night show (which you're all welcome to visit, of course- Fox and Fiddle Bloor St.). This week's minor stall and freefall didn't kill me, so I guess it made me stronger. The next fuckheads to tangle with me will find themselves taking the heat for a month's worth of bullshit.

Watch this space in the coming week or so- I've got some great posts coming up. Gooneegoogoo.
