So here's the situation.
Billy is my friend. Billy moved in with Sarah. So Sarah also became my friend. Billy and Sarah got engaged. But Billy is emotionally unstable, and Sarah has a complex about committing to anything long-term. So, predictably, they broke up, and moved out of their apartment.
According to Sarah, while moving out, Billy apparently took a swing at Sarah, and subsequently got knocked out by Sarah's mother's boyfriend. But according to Billy, Sarah was yanking things out of Billy's hands, which made him fall and hit his head on the pavement. Or something. He wouldn't clarify.
At any rate, I had to pick him up from the hospital. And now Sarah is scared to talk to Billy face to face.
Now they're moved out. But Billy still has a lot of Sarah's stuff. Checkbooks, credit cards, $300 pieces of electronic equipment. Important stuff. Being Ryan's friend, and being Sarah's friend, I try to get everything sorted out. Naturally, Billy doesn't like me mentioning Sarah, especially not when I'm trying to procure some of her belongings. But the belongings begin to slowly migrate back to their natural habitats.
Sarah is friends with Michelle. Michelle is married to Tom. Tom is my friend. I hang out with Michelle and Tom. Now that Sarah is no longer attached to Billy, Sarah also hangs out with Michelle and Tom. Sarah tells me how she hates all men right now. I understand completely. Billy is hardly a sterling specimen. We all four go to an arcade one night. It is fun.
The next day, Tom mentions to Billy in passing that Tom went to an arcade the night before, and that pensquare was there. And that Sarah was there. Billy drives straight to my house. He says he can't be my friend any more, because he still loves Sarah, and the fact that his friend hangs out with Sarah creates too much pain. Or something. He wouldn't clarify.
Back story over.
1. I am the kind of person that feels disporprotionately guilty whenever I do something wrong. But I don't feel guilty this time.
2. I refused to take a side. So Billy chose one for me.
3. Billy is currently in posession of over $500 worth of aquarium equipment. My equipment. The original aggreement was that he would either give it back or pay for it. Now, who knows? I am afraid I will get the same treatment Sarah does: unanswered phonecalls.
4. Billy is of the lawsuit-happy persuasion. I feel anything I say or do must be of a quality that I can defend in court. This will make getting my property back very difficult, should he decide it's not mine any more.
So what do you think? Am I the asshole? Have I lost over $500 worth of junk? Is there enough info here to make a judgement either way?
ElleBelle: As always, names have been changed for plausible deniability.

I wish the best of luck to you, and to Sarah - in hopes you both get yr things back and things don't get messy (or more so than they are already).
anyways i liked yr profile pic.
radness.
2. True, he did choose. Oh well.
3. There's no reason that the original agreement shouldn't go through just beacuse you aren't friends anymore. Just move up the deadline on the decision. No matter what, that's a lot of fundage to just let some dude keep because he's grumpy over you talking to his ex.
4. If you're this worried about lawsuits, then make sure you always have at least one other person with you when you call him/talk to him in person, and better yet, communicate in ways that allow you to retain documentation. Email, or even a certified letter can be retained for your records.
See, I do stop by to see your page
