When I was 15(and not yet Out), I dated a fella' who turned me back to my southern roots, through rockabilly. Though we barely kissed, talked, or liked each other, he gave me the greatest musical gift one could give a young impressionable Pekoe...he introduced me to The Cramps. He was in two psychobilly bands and one was a Cramps cover band. I remember him riding his big white base guitar and screaming, "She Said" down, at me. I shaked and shimmied the hell out of my white fringe bra and electric red mohawk. After hearing, The Cramp,s I bought all of their records and sewed fringe to all of my clothes so that I could break out into a spontanious dance-freak-out whenever I felt like it. My dad thought they sounded like Elvis on Speed and I thought they brought me closer to shamanic states of ecstasy, so speed was a good description.

I write this, because one of The Cramps insperators just passed this summer. His name was Hasil Adkins(pronounced Hassle) and he wrote, "She Said"!! He was the original naked-monkey-gasm rockabilly shriller. He died in his four wall broken-down shack with barely enough dough for a proper burial. Though he is a Rockabilly Hall-of-Famer, he never had a record contract or much money for all his one--man -band hootin.
